# Default player paint clearcoat correction, r257

The untouched player paint now selects the existing restrained clearcoat
mode 2, whose shader strength is 0.38. Previously `DEFAULT_PLAYER_PAINT`
selected `gloss`, and the custom player paint branch bypassed the unresolved
material fallback in `vehiclePaintFinishMode`, selecting full-strength mode 1.

The distinction is now explicit in the paint state: `default` selects mode 2;
the user's chosen `gloss`, `metallic`, `pearl`, and `matte` finishes retain
modes 1, 3, 4, and 0. The shop includes a Default option, and save/load accepts
that option alongside all existing saved finishes. Existing saved gloss is
still an explicit gloss selection. The default body color remains `#858c94`.

This restores the restrained fallback documented in
[`ambient-car-material-r168.md`](ambient-car-material-r168.md), including its
r183 38% clearcoat adjustment. It does not decode the selected retail paint
state or establish a retail shader match. No scene shader, city-lighting
equation, glass treatment, geometry, or material-role rule changed.

The source and packaged viewer and bootstrap are identical at r257. The HTML
also retains the package builder's required city-manifest path rewrite. The same-camera Chrome comparison uses the
same rebuilt stock GLBs, default stationary camera, 800x600 viewport and
120-unit radius. Only the baseline viewer module is replaced with the saved
pre-change module. Both captures wait for scene/texture loading to settle and
the reflection probe to become ready.

The earlier MOLDINGS audit's diagnosis of the default finish bypass describes
the behavior before this correction. The remaining body material, road
lighting and atmosphere gaps still apply.
