# Default player paint finish check, r290 (2026-10-16)

Restored `DEFAULT_PLAYER_PAINT.finish` to `default`, matching the earlier r257 fallback behavior. The source and packaged viewers use `playerPaintFinishMode("default") === 2`, the restrained 0.38 clearcoat path, until a player explicitly selects gloss, metallic, pearl, or matte.

A fresh headless Chrome 150 profile loaded the packaged L4RA drive scene at route 450, distance 510. The page reached `City scene ready` with 24,556 nearby triangles and all 120 nearby textures uploaded. Debug draw state for the 240SX body reported base color `(0.522, 0.549, 0.580)`, finish mode 2, no base texture, and a loaded environment panorama. The screenshot records this state.

The mode correction restores the documented viewer fallback; the base color remains the neutral preview `#858c94`. No retail paint value is inferred. Paint texture/state and glass alpha/BlendState remain unresolved in [`player-paint-texture-source-audit-r283.md`](player-paint-texture-source-audit-r283.md).
